There is news about next years deals between the major TV networks and satellite networks. Some are bidding to have more games shown but its the TV channel with the main deals. What will happen? well they are still in the process and there is also talks about changing up the amount of rounds each team will play for the 2012 season. The season cant go much longer than it does already however its hard to make it so every team will play twice and have equal amount of home games. In the end there’s always going to be some unfairness to some teams due to the season length. Lets see what happens with these two as they progress.

Why I had to watch AFL live online after I came across the sport of footy. I didn’t realize just how seriously Aussies take their sport, however, until a short while later. When I finally came to this awareness, it was evident to me that nothing was to come in between Australians and their beloved sport.

Whether it be rugby, cricket, or footy, it seems that Aussies live and breath sports. What is it that makes Australians so passionate about their games? Having spent some time in this Southern continent, I have learnt a thing or two about these people and their sports. This article is an attempt to enlighten other immigrants of the importance of sports when it comes to culturally interacting with Australians.

After I started to watch AFL live online I found out that The Australian Football League (AFL) grew out of a Victorian domestic club in 1982 with the South Melbourne Swans relocating, then becoming the Sydney Swans. Since that time the AFL has continued to expand and has become the national governing body of Aussie Rules Football. Melbourne has been named the sporting capital of the world, and no wonder, with its major role played in the formation of the AFL, along with its involvement in each of the other major sporting events. Melbourne sports (excuse the pun!) top quality sporting facilities and hosts major sporting events including the Australian Tennis Open, the AFL Grand Finals, and international cricket matches. Etihad Stadium, AAMI Park, and the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) are just some of the stadiums that make Victorians proud.

A national survey a few years back showed that 11 million Australians aged 15 and over participated at least once a week in physical exercise – including Aussie rules footy. Footy is not only a participation game, it is also a spectators game – being the most watched Australian sport – and it is well known that Aussies will frequently make a trip down to the MCG in the city for a Saturday afternoon footy match with a beer and meat pie in hand. Radios all around Melbourne tune into the current footy broadcast, and during Grand Final season conversation centres not around the weather, but around which team you predict will win. It goes without saying that every Victorian, if not every Australian, is expected to barrack for a particular team – and if you don’t, you will soon be converted!

Holding true to the Australian stereotype that Aussies go for the underdog, many die-hard footy supporters choose to go for the teams with the poor prognosis – when they do finally win the Grand Final, there is much rejoicing.

Sports in general has been argued to have had a major impact on the culture of Australia. Whether it helps to promote various symbols and colours based on the flora and fauna of Australia, or whether it brings communities together in a bond of loyalty created by team atmosphere, or an excuse for fun and celebration, when asked to give a description of Australian culture, sports will naturally rank high on the list.

Since coming to Australia I have learnt a thing or two about Australians and their love for sport. When considering the impact of sport on culture, I tend to think that it works both ways – that culture has also had an impact on the sport. Cultural characteristics such as sticking up for ones’ mate along with loyalty are in so many ways demonstrated excellently through sport.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Australia, you may want to have a look at the AFL teams, decide who you’ll barrack for, and come along to a footy game…just make sure to buy a meat pie while you’re at it and if your out of the country you can always watch AFL live online.

What is the AFL Grand Final? It is a yearly football Australian rules match usually held on the last Saturday of September at Melbourne, Australia’s Cricket Ground in order to know the Australian Football League champions premiership for that particular year.  Take note that the game is very significant to Australia’s culture as it has spawned a slew of traditions and activities which has become popular since the expansion of the interstate back in the 80′s as well as the consequent creation of the AFL national competition back in the 90s. According to the Sweeney Sports 2006 report, the AFL Grand Final is the most critical sporting event in Australia. It also has the largest attendance. The Grand Final winner is given the Premiership Flag and AFL Premiership Cup.

Its origin dates back in 1897. The idea of a “Grand” final came from the VFL or Victorian Football League after its establishment in 1897. Back in the 19th century, the Australian football competition utilized the approach done by England Football Association. Eventually, the VFL stated that the series finals be played between the four teams at the top and end of the football season – an event that would surely produce tons of interest and money.

It was at this time that the VFL conducted a tournament in round robin style wherein the top four battled each other one time and the team with the most win is  announced the winner. Unfortunately, such a method contained flaws. The VFL then went on to experiment and played section matches after the usual season. The winners of such sem finals met in order to determine the premiership. The first final in 1898 was contested.

In the year 2001, the Brisbane Lions successively won the first of the three AFL Grand Final premierships. The Lions won against the Bomber outfit during 2001′s second half decider. The next season saw the Collingwood underdogs force the Lions to the limit during the Grand Final in 2002.

In the year 2003, Brisbane achieved final and third premiership. The supporters of Sydney Swans Red and White army celebrated the AFL 2006 Grand Final with a goal. Meanwhile, 2007 until the year 2009 saw Geelong as dominant in all 3 Grand Finals. However, the year 2007 saw the Finals as belonging to the Cats who established their authority 44 years after their last premiership. The next year saw Geelong similarly winning 21 out of all 22 games matching the 2000 record of Essendons. But in 2008, Hawthorn stunned all thanks to their 26 pt victory during the Grand 2008 Final.

St Kilda and Collingwood met each other in 2010 for the first time ever since 1966. The match resulted in a 3rd draw in the history of the grand final thanks to a 68 point score for the two teams. It was Lenny Hayes who took home the Norm Smith medal. The replay of the AFL grand final was conducted on October 2. It was Collingwood who won by 56 points during the replay while it was Scott Pendlebury who grabbed the Norm Smith Medal the second time.
